چکیده
We extensively explore three different aspects of Born-Infeld (BI) type nonlinear $U(1)$ gauge-invariant modifications Maxwell's classical electrodynamics (also known as BI-type electrodynamics) and bring some new perspectives on these theories. First, within the framework exponential gauge theory, it is explicitly proved that although electric field at location elementary point charges not finite, but total electrostatic energy finite. Motivated by this observation together with a wealth evidence, we conjecture all theories in 4-dimensional spacetime belong to BI family result finite self-energy for charged particles. In higher dimensions, found weak-field coupling limit theories, which identified weak effective Euler-Heisenberg (EH) does possess regularizing ability make charge implies may hold However, prove BI, logarithmic arbitrary dimensions well. Next, classically study problem vacuum polarization effects then systematically connection between QED. It shown predict effects, final results are exactly one-to-one correspondence QED EH theory up leading order corrections. Finally, present new, simple proof indicating ...

Supersymmetry and gauge symmetry breaking with naturally vanishing vacuum energy
We review the construction of N = 1 supergravity models where the Higgs and super-Higgs effects are simultaneously realized, with naturally vanishing classical vacuum energy and goldstino components along gauge-non-singlet directions: this situation is likely to occur in the effective theories of realistic string models. Invited talk presented at SUSY–95, Palaiseau, France, 15–19 May 1995 CERN-...
متن کاملFixed Points and Vacuum Energy of Dynamically Broken Gauge Theories
We show that if a gauge theory with dynamical symmetry breaking has non-trivial fixed points, they will correspond to extrema of the vacuum energy. This relationship provides a different method to determine fixed points. e-mail : [email protected] e-mail : [email protected]
متن کاملOn The Problem of Vacuum energy in Brane Theories
We point out that modern brane theories suffer from a severe vacuum energy problem. To be specific, the Casimir energy associated with the matter fields confined to the brane, is stemming from the one and the same localization mechanism which forms the brane itself, and is thus generically unavoidable. Possible practical solutions are discussed, including in particular spontaneously broken supe...
متن کاملGauge Symmetry and the Theta-Vacuum
ly, a symmetry of a structure is an automorphism a transformation that maps the elements of an object back onto themselves so as to preserve the structure of that object. A physical theory speci es a set of models mathematical structures that may be used to represent various di¤erent situations, actual as well as merely possible, and to make claims about them. Any application of a physical t...
متن کاملGauge Symmetry Breaking in Gauge Theories—In Search of Clarification
The paper investigates the spontaneous breaking of gauge symmetries in gauge theories from a philosophical angle. Local gauge symmetry itself cannot break spontaneously in quantized gauge theories according to Elitzur’s theorem—even though the notion of a spontaneously broken local gauge symmetry is widely employed in textbook expositions of the Higgs mechanism, the standard account of mass gen...
